Mini Guide to Barbados
The land is lush and green, cricket is the national game, bustling capital Bridgetown even has a Trafalgar Square complete with a statue of Lord Nelson (without the column).
Famed for its top quality beaches, wide range of hotels and resorts, and raucous nightlife, it is no wonder Barbados has always been popular with the British.
Barbados has a long-established tourist industry and is highly experienced in providing efficient service to clientele ranging from holidaying Prime Ministers to Big Brother rejects.
Barbados does not have the dramatic scenery of the volcanic Leeward and Windward isles to its west, but it does have attractive rolling countryside with vast fields of sugar cane and pretty, colourful villages. The rugged Atlantic seaboard has become increasingly popular with surfers in recent years and is also renowned for windsurfing, but it is the golden sand beaches of the south and west coasts that are the top draw on Barbados. Away from the beach, visitors can enjoy a tour of one of the island’s rum plants, take a leisurely walk around colonial Bridgetown, or take in a cricket match at the Kensington Oval.
The climate in Barbados is tropical, but it rarely gets excessively hot because of the cooling trade wind. Temperatures range from the low-20s to mid-30s, with the coolest and driest time generally falling between December and May. The summer and autumn months tend to be more humid, but Barbados is rarely struck by the heavy storms that ravage much of the Caribbean during hurricane season (June to November).
