Much of the attention being showered on the UAE might be directed towards glitzy Dubai, but Abu Dhabi is also growing at a rapid pace, having recently seen the opening of the Emirates Palace hotel, reputed to be the most expensive ever built.
Flights to Dubai are available from various corners of the UK, courtesy of Emirates, who offer a huge range of onward connections to Asia, Australia and Africa. Emirates' latest addition to its UK-Dubai flights portfolio is Newcastle - this route starts in September 2007.
The newly established Etihad Airways are trying to play a similar game in Abu Dhabi, with a route from Manchester having been started last year.
Additional competition is provided by British Airways and Asian airlines such as Bangladesh Biman and Royal Brunei, who use the UAE as a stopping-off point.
Virgin Atlantic started flights to Dubai at the end of March 2006.
