Even though there are four different airlines competing for your custom on flights to Bangkok from London (the Taiwanese airline Eva and Australian national carrier Qantas supplement the de facto competition between British Airways and Thai Airways), you usually have to pay considerably more for the privilege of flying direct to Bangkok rather than taking connecting flights. We would consider flying via somewhere like Abu Dhabi or Dubai to be a minor inconvenience if there are decent cost savings to be made.
Although there is extensive competition on flights from London to Bangkok, there are currently no direct flights to the Thai capital from any other British cities outside London, or from Ireland. However, despite this competition on London to Bangkok flights, most flights to Bangkok from UK regional airports will involve a connection via Dubai or a major European hub such as Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
Bangkok might seem like an obvious destination for budget airlines to offer cheap flights from the UK, but we are not aware of any plans to launch such a route. The main reason is that there is already extensive competition between four different mainstream airlines on the London to Bangkok route. As we've saw with the demise of no-frills carrier Oasis Hong Kong in 2008, it is very difficult for a low-cost airline to compete in such a hostile environment, especially as the big boys will have no qualms about temporarily slashing their fares in order to kill off any competition. With fluctuating oil prices, and continuing uncertainty over the economy, don't expect anyone to start offering bargain flights to Bangkok in the near future.
