  • Flights to Taiwan (ROC) - Overview

    Direct flights

There are currently no direct non-stop flights to Taiwan from the UK, although it is possible to reach the capital Taipei without changing plane by travelling with Eva Airways via Bangkok. Taiwan was one of the countries to have fallen victim to British Airways' Asian route cutbacks and no other European airlines operate non-stop flights there, although Dutch carrier KLM offer one-stop flights from Amsterdam to Taipei.

    Connecting flights

Eva also operate a few non-stop flights to Taipei from Paris, with regular feeders being available from various UK regional departure points. The tension between Taiwan and China ensures that there are very few links between the two rivals - for example there are only two flights each week between Taipei and Beijing. Consequently, there are good links between Taiwan and the two "Special Administrative Regions" of Hong Kong and Macau. You should have no problems finding connecting flights to Taipei via either Hong Kong or the Thai capital Bangkok.

    Domestic flights

From a European perspective, we might see Taiwan as a small dot in the South China Sea, but there are around ten destinations within Taiwan which can be reached by domestic flights from Taipei.  Note that Taipei has two airports - the new Chiang Kai Shek airport is used for international flights, whereas all domestic flights operate to and from Taipei's Sung Shan airport. The route between Taipei and Taiwan’s second-city of Kaohsiung is one of the busiest in the world, with over 35 flights each day, but none of these operate to and from Chiang Kai Shek. Although regular shuttle buses take some of the hassle away from transferring between Taipei's two airports, it is always worth noting that regular connecting flights to Taiwan's second city of Kaohsiung are also available through cities such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong -  all of which offer much more user-friendly facilities for changing plane.

Note that the market for flights within Taiwan is very competitive, and there might be several different airlines operating each route, not all of which will offer through fares from Europe.
