Flights to Singapore -- January 2009 price comparison guide
We searched our partner site Ebookers.com for economy-class flights to Singapore on a one-week trip, starting on the April 15 and returning on April 22.
Flights to Singapore from London
- £409 (Emirates via Dubai).
- £501 (Singapore Airlines -- non-stop flight).
- £547 (British Airways -- non-stop flight).
Although Singapore cannot quite offer flights from London below the £400 mark, these flights with Emirates at £409 still offer very good value considering how far Singapore is from the UK. Whether you think a change of plane at Dubai's fantastic megamall airport is an inconvenience or an advantage is down to your own preference. Of the direct options, Singapore Airlines easily presents the best value. They have an unrivalled reputation for outstanding customer service and, in this case at least, are almost £50 cheaper than BA
All of the above flights operate from London Heathrow (LHR) to Singapore Changi International airport (SIN).
Cheap flights to Singapore with budget airlines
Although Singapore has a dedicated budget airlines terminal, there are currently cheap flights to Singapore from the UK operated by specialist no-frills airlines. This is unlikely to change, as there is already reasonable competition between British Airways and Singapore Airlines, and also from Qantas, who use Singapore as a stopover on their flights to Australia. There are also plenty of connecting flights via the Middle East, or other hubs in Europe, and even India, which can offer even better value than some of the direct flight options. As we've already seen following the collapse of Oasis Hong Kong airlines in 2008, it would be extremely difficult for a start-up airline to gain any headway in this market place.
Singapore flights from UK regional airports
Although competition is certainly most intense on the London to Singapore route, Singapore is one of the few Asian cities outside the Middle East to offer direct flights from a UK regional airport. In addition to their Heathrow route, Singapore Airlines operate flights between Manchester and Singapore.
- Flights to Singapore from Birmingham - £409 (Emirates via Dubai).
- Flights to Singapore from Bristol -£ 654 (KLM via Amsterdam) -- much better value flights from Birmingham or London.
- Flights to Singapore from Belfast - £ £679 (British Airways via Heathrow).
- Flights to Singapore from Dublin - £950 (British Airways via Heathrow) -- better value to take a no-frills flight from Dublin and then buy the London to Singapore flights separately.
- Flights to Singapore from Edinburgh -£ 685 (British Airways via Heathrow) -- much better value flights from Glasgow.
- Flights to Singapore from Glasgow - £479 (Emirates via Dubai).
- Flights to Singapore from Leeds Bradford - £653 (KLM via Amsterdam) -- much better value from flights from Manchester or flights from Newcastle; alternatively book flights from London to Singapore, and make your own way to Heathrow.
- Flights to Singapore from Manchester - £ 453 (Emirates via Dubai). Also available direct from Manchester to Singapore with Singapore Airlines, but these flights must be booked direct with the airline. These flights do not operate daily, so the closest dates are out on the April 15, returning on April 23 -- £514 return.
- Flights to Singapore from Newcastle - £ 446 (Emirates via Dubai).
Again, we are seeing that flights to Singapore from Ireland are particularly poor value, which is not that surprising, considering that links between either Dublin or Belfast and Asian transfer hubs are very poor, and considering that Belfast still lacks a feeder flight into one of the main European mainland hubs. However, the lack of cheap flights from Leeds Bradford isn't so easy to explain - passengers can easily make the trip to alternative airports such as Manchester or Newcastle, and we are sure that they will!
Mini Guide to Singapore
Perhaps best known for its draconian chewing gum laws (leave the Hubba Bubba at home), Singapore has an undeserved reputation as a rather staid and conservative place. This couldn’t be further from the truth, for Singapore offers a thrilling mix of Chinese, Malay and Indian culture amid the gleaming skyscrapers and colonial splendour of its impressive downtown. The most surprising aspect of a visit to Singapore is the profusion of lush equatorial forest to be found once you leave the urban areas. Similar in size and shape to the Isle of Wight, Singapore is situated at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsular and is a popular stop-off on the long trek from Europe to Australia. The city-state provides a safe and easy introduction to South-East Asia – crime is virtually unheard of, smoking is banned in all public places and there is an almost obsessive approach towards food hygiene. Singapore is also a shopper paradise, offering some of the cheapest electronics in the region. Singapore is barely 100 miles north of the equator, so it is invariably humid all year round. It is usually coolest (and wettest!) during the winter months, but even then the temperatures rarely dip below 30 celsius. July is generally the driest month. Singapore offers the full gamut of accommodation, from cheap and cheerful hostels to palatial luxury hotels.
