More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Singapore
As Singapore is one of the major stopping off points on the "kangaroo route" between the UK and Australia, regular flights from London are available with British Airways and Qantas, as well as with Singapore Airlines. British Airways and Qantas have an extensive code share agreement on their flights to Australia, and although British Airways have recently stopped the continuation of their flights from London to Melbourne beyond Singapore, they continue to offer a high frequency of service on the London to Singapore leg of this journey. As major shareholders in Virgin Atlantic, Singapore Airlines have a joint marketing arrangement with the British airline on their flights from London, with Singapore Airlines also offering regular flights from Manchester to Singapore.
Connecting flights
Although Singapore is a major hub in its own right, Manchester is the only other UK city outside London to have direct flights there. As well as the usual connections through other European airports - KLM and Lufthansa operate many of their Asian flights through Singapore - there are also several cities in the Middle East offering regular onward connections to Singapore. Emirates in particular offer regular flights between Dubai and Singapore, with feeders from Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester, as well as from London.
Mini Guide to Singapore
Perhaps best known for its draconian chewing gum laws (leave the Hubba Bubba at home), Singapore has an undeserved reputation as a rather staid and conservative place. This couldn’t be further from the truth, for Singapore offers a thrilling mix of Chinese, Malay and Indian culture amid the gleaming skyscrapers and colonial splendour of its impressive downtown.
The most surprising aspect of a visit to Singapore is the profusion of lush equatorial forest to be found once you leave the urban areas. Similar in size and shape to the Isle of Wight, Singapore is situated at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsular and is a popular stop-off on the long trek from Europe to Australia. The city-state provides a safe and easy introduction to South-East Asia – crime is virtually unheard of, smoking is banned in all public places and there is an almost obsessive approach towards food hygiene. Singapore is also a shopper paradise, offering some of the cheapest electronics in the region.
Singapore is barely 100 miles north of the equator, so it is invariably humid all year round. It is usually coolest (and wettest!) during the winter months, but even then the temperatures rarely dip below 30 celsius. July is generally the driest month. Singapore offers the full gamut of accommodation, from cheap and cheerful hostels to palatial luxury hotels.
