Osaka's Kansai regional airport is a remarkable feat of modern engineering, being situated on a man-made island in the Kobe Bay. The airport's ultramodern Renzo Piano designed terminal is the longest building in the world. The airport was constructed by British engineering firm Arup, and is connected to the mainland via a road and rail bridge.

No attraction bears out the city’s historical perspective more than the glittering Osaka Castle, commonly referred to as “the symbol of Osaka”. It does, after all, possess great symbolic value. Built in the 16th century by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the son of a farmer who rose to become one of medieval Japan’s greatest rulers, the Castle somehow survived the bombing that destroyed the city’s canals and wooden buildings during World War II. Also still standing: the Sumiyoshi Shrine, a shining example of classical Japanese design; and the Tenno-ji, the oldest temple in all Japan.

Of course, Osaka also stands for all that is ultra-modern. Sometimes the ultra-modern comes with a logo or brand name upon it, as is the case over at the Universal Studios Japan theme park, or Sega’s Joypolis, a massive gaming complex aimed at the square-eyed and sore-thumbed. Sometimes it’s simply a familiar location given an unexpected twist. Hep 5 is a run-of-the-mill (if sprawling) shopping mall, in the middle of which somebody’s only gone and built a massive Ferris wheel. And the Kaiyukan takes that old tourism stand-by - the aquarium - and turns it on its head: all of a sudden, it’s the visitors, rather than the fish, who feel as though they’re underwater. (And yet remain remarkably dry.)
