Flights to Iran - Overview
Despite the ongoing political tensions, there is strong demand for flights from the UK to Iran, not least because there are such large numbers of Iranians living in London. Sanctions imposed by the US make it difficult to maintain American built aircraft in Iran, placing heavy restrictions on national airline Iranair, who have had to ground much of their fleet. Regular flights are still available from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Tehran, whereas cities such as Isfahan can be reached by taking connecting flights through other Middle Eastern cities such as Dubai.
Note that there are two airports in Tehran - the older Mehrabad International (THR), which is seven miles from the city centre; and the new Imam Khomeini International airport (IKA), which is 22 miles from Tehran. Imam Khomeini International has been plagued by problems ranging from an allegedly suspect runway surface to poor road access. International flights arrive at both airports, although both British Airways and BMED flights from London continue to operate into Mehrabad airport. Most domestic flights within Iran also depart from Mehrabad airport, but it is always worth checking that any potential connecting flights do not require a transfer between the two hubs.
