More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Jakarta

Indonesian airline Garuda offer flights to Jakarta from a wide range of cities in Asia and the Middle East. Indonesia's colonial links with the Netherlands also ensure that flights to Jakarta are available from Amsterdam. Additionally, Lufthansa operates flights to Jakarta from Frankfurt, but in both of the above cases, a stopover – in either Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, is needed on route. If you are considering reaching other parts of Indonesia via Jakarta, especially popular resort destinations such as Bali, it is usually easier to take connections via other Asian cities which have better flight links with the UK. Singapore in particular has a wide range of connections throughout Indonesia.

Mini Guide to Jakarta

Like many other latter-day cities (and latter-day South East Asian cities, in particular), this is a destination of extremes. Shacks and skyscrapers denote the vast gulf between rich and poor, while the weather goes from a sweltering average humidity of 81%, making air conditioning a must, to all-out flooding during the monsoon season, when the city’s ill-equipped underground canals frequently burst their banks, resulting in flooded streets.

Must-see attractions within the city are few and far-between, meaning many travellers simply use Jakarta for the business of meetings or as a base for exploring Indonesia‘s more exotic territory. Nonetheless, there’s just about enough here to discern Jakarta’s past and present-day personality. The National Monument (MONAS) is an ironically Russian-built testament to Indonesian independence, but the diversity of nationalities in these parts is perhaps even better illustrated by the city’s churches: the Immanuel, built for Willem II; the Black Portuguese Church; and the Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in the country and second largest in the world.

The region’s artistic heritage is on display at the Jakarta Fine Arts Gallery and the Museum Gadjah (National Gallery), with its fine collection of Oriental ceramics, and the wayang kulit tradition of Javanese storytelling is much in evidence over at the Puppet Museum, with its three-quarters human-sized dolls. No less small-scale is the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Indonesia Miniature Park). If the vastness of Indonesia is getting too much to handle - and with 13,000 islands to negotiate, it’s pretty vast - then here are all 27 provinces compressed for your delectation and (undoubtedly) delight in one easy-to-access Jakarta attraction.
