Mini Guide to Amritsar
Its name translates as “the pool of nectar”, and Amritsar indeed provides both sweet relief and spiritual sustenance for the many Sikhs who make the pilgrimage here each year. One of the jewels of the state of Punjab, Amritsar is amongst the most sacred – and popular - destinations in the whole of India. One attraction in particular stands out from the rest: the stunning Golden Temple, with its fabled Pool of Immortality. It’s little surprise to learn that the city grew up around this remarkable place of worship, inspiring both the architecturally-similar Durgiana Mandir, a temple established in praise of the goddess Durga, and Ram Tirath, known for its array of herbal medicines.
Spirituality often grows out of or adjacent to conflict, and squeezed in between its many temples, Amritsar bears several reminders of its turbulent colonial past: one rare non-devotional feature is Jallianwala Bagh, a monument to those massacred by British troops during India’s fight for independence. Current tensions run along India’s border with Pakistan at Wagah, situated just 20km from Amritsar: regular coach trips are organised for tourists who want to witness the changing of the guard ceremony.
