Flights to Hong Kong – January 2009 price comparison sample
We searched our partner site Ebookers.com for flights to Hong Kong on a one-week trip, starting on the April 15 and returning on April 22.
Flights to Hong Kong from London
- £376 (British Airways or Virgin Atlantic - non-stop).
- £386 (Air New Zealand – one inch more legroom than BA or Virgin in economy class; also non-stop).
Whereas our price comparison sample for flights to Beijing and Shanghai found the best value flights to be via an indirect routing, Hong Kong is such a major hub that direct flights represent the best value.
Cheap flights to Hong Kong with budget airlines
In October 2006, Oasis Hong Kong airlines launched no-frills flights between London Gatwick and Hong Kong, with a launch price of just £150 return. Unfortunately, faced with high oil prices and intense competition from no fewer than five rival airlines on the London to Hong Kong route, Oasis Hong Kong airlines went bust in April 2008. Considering the current market situation, we think it is highly unlikely that anyone else will step forward and try and launch another budget airline on the London to Hong Kong route, although we will be watching closely the progress of Air Asia X with its cheap flights between London and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. If these flights to prove to be successful, then the possibility of Air Asia X opening up new long-haul routes from other Asian cities should not be discounted completely.
Even without budget airlines, Hong Kong is one of the few Far Eastern destinations to have flights available for less than £400 (as of January 2009), and we always expect Hong Kong flights to offer consistent good value due to the intensive competition which exists between the different airlines.Note that all of the above Hong Kong flights above depart from London Heathrow (LHR). All Hong Kong flights arrive into the fantastically effiecient Chep Lap Kok International airport (HKG).
Hong Kong flights from UK regional airports
Despite the intensive competition on Hong Kong flights from London, there are, unfortunately, no direct flights to Hong Kong from any other UK regional airport. In 2005, Cathay Pacific had announced plans to operate flights from Manchester to Hong Kong via Moscow, although these never came to fruition. Because of the strength of the London to Hong Kong route, many of the best value flights from UK regional airports to Hong Kong are also via London, although flying with Swiss via Zurich is another popular option, alongside flights with KLM via Amsterdam, or Emirates via Dubai:
- Flights to Hong Kong from Birmingham - £392 (Swiss via Zurich).
- Flights to Hong Kong from Bristol -£ 555 (KLM via Amsterdam); much better value from London or Birmingham.
- Flights to Hong Kong from Belfast - £494 (BMI/Virgin Atlantic via Heathrow).
- Flights to Hong Kong from Dublin -£511 (British Airways via Heathrow).
- Flights to Hong Kong from Edinburgh - £432 (British Airways via Heathrow); also consider flights from Glasgow with Emirates via Dubai - slightly cheaper, and avoids overcrowded Heathrow.
- Flights to Hong Kong from Glasgow - £416 (Emirates via Dubai).
- Flights to Hong Kong from Leeds Bradford - £527 (Air New Zealand via Heathrow); much better value from Manchester or Newcastle.
- Flights to Hong Kong from Manchester - £391 (Swiss via Zurich).
- Flights to Hong Kong from Newcastle - £386 (KLM via Amsterdam).
As we've seen on so many destinations, it is much harder to find cheap flights to Hong Kong from Ireland, and also from Leeds Bradford, which remains very un-competitive. Why aren't there any cheap flights from Leeds Bradford to Hong Kong? This is something which defies competitive logic - passengers in Ireland don't have many other alternative airports to go to beyond Belfast and Dublin. On the other hand, with this kind of price differential, Leeds Bradford is going to leak passengers to Manchester and Newcastle by the bucket load. Flights from Bristol aren't that cheap either, but it is always going to be much easier for Bristol passenges to nip along the M4 corridor to Heathrow.
Mini Guide to Hong Kong
This former British colony has developed a false reputation as amongst the most cut-throat of destinations: if not through its status as a hot-seat of international finance and commerce, than as the bullet-strewn backdrop of the action thrillers and kung-fu pics that made the name of, amongst others, actors Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, and director John Woo. In fact, the residents of Hong Kong prove to be some of the most polite and welcoming in Asia. Regarded as a gateway for trade and industry in South East Asia, Hong Kong blends traditional Chinese culture - festivals, monasteries and temples - with a Westernised view of the world resulting from a century of British rule. Familiar brand names are much in evidence in the region’s shopping precincts, while the Lan Kwai Fong district boasts some of the liveliest nightlife in the region. Elsewhere, with its surprising number of harbours and beaches, Hong Kong can offer stunning vistas: a trip on the Kowloon ferry reveals arguably the most spectacular skyline in the world, while Victoria Peak provides breathtaking bird’s-eye views of this bustling destination. Most travellers choose to visit between October and April, when the weather is cooler; from late June to September, temperatures frequently climb to 30ºC, with humidity reaching an almost unbearable 95%.
