Flights to Shanghai – Januray 2009 price comparison sample
We researched our partner site Ebookers.com for flights to Shanghai on a one-week trip, starting on April 15 and returning on April 22.
Flights to Shanghai from London
- £385 (Emirates via Dubai)
- £438 (Virgin Atlantic non-stop)
Although these flights with Emirates are exceptional value, showing Shanghai to be one of the few Far Eastern destinations to have flights available for less than £400, many passengers will prefer to pay a little bit extra to the advantages of the non-stop flight with Virgin.
Shanghai flights from UK regional airports
- Flights to Shanghai from Birmingham - £385 (Emirates via Dubai).
- Flights to Shanghai from Bristol - £450 (KLM via Amsterdam).
- Flights to Shanghai from Belfast - £595 (Virgin Atlantic via Heathrow). Or you could save around £100 by flying from Dublin instead (Air France via Paris).
- Flights to Shanghai from Edinburgh - £389 (KLM via Amsterdam).
- Flights to Shanghai from Glasgow - £389 (KLM via Amsterdam).
- Flights to Shanghai from Leeds Bradford - £612 (Virgin Atlantic via Heathrow).
- Flights to Shanghai from Manchester - £388 (KLM via Amsterdam).
- Flights to Shanghai from Newcastle - £392 (KLM via Amsterdam).
As the sample above shows, there are some quite substantial differences on Shanghai flight prices between the different UK regional departure airports. KLM generally offers the consistently best value on UK flights to Shanghai, although they did not have any cheap flights from Leeds Bradford on the dates sampled. Unsurprisingly, the other expensive regional city to fly from is Belfast, which only offers flight connections via Heathrow. This unfortunately highlights how badly Northern Ireland needs some feeder flights into one of the main European continental hubs!
The average price for this sample of Shanghai flights across ten UK departure airports worked out as £448 - making Shanghai one of the best value of all Asian destinations. We also sampled flights to Beijing at the same time. Flights to Beijing are generally slightly more expensive than Shanghai flights, with an average sample price of £474.
Mini Guide to Shanghai
Booming Shanghai is growing so fast you can expect to hear this from your teenage son! Shanghai sells itself on atmosphere rather than sites. It might not have a Big Ben, a Statue of Liberty, or an Eiffel Tower, but this city boasts a unique energy that make it just about the most exciting place on earth. Mind you, Shanghai has never been dull. In its position as the gateway to China, it has always had a somewhat edgy allure. Every aspiring colonial power wanted to seize control of Shanghai, it was the ultimate imperial “prize”. Opium was one of the most valuable commodities traded in the city, and Shanghai became notorious for its drug dens, organised crime, and brothels. The Communists put an end to Shanghai’s orgy of excess – letting the city slide into decline after all the foreigners left, seemingly as a punishment for being so intrinsically linked with the West. Luckily most of the colonial buildings were left untouched, giving much of the ‘old’ Shanghai a distinctly European feel, albeit an appealing hotch-potch of every architectural style imaginable intermingling with traditional Chinese neighbourhoods. The old buildings which straddle the Huangpu River on the legendary Bund or in the alluring Frenchtown are now being lovingly restored, as all around them the city grows at a frightening pace. Shanghai is the biggest building site in the world - everywhere you look there are new skyscrapers going up, indeed a whole new city has appeared from nowhere across the river in the former farming district of Pudong. As a leading business centre, Shanghai is busy all year round, but the best times to visit as a tourist are spring and autumn, when the weather is relatively mild. It can get unbearably cold during the winter, and extremely humid in the summer.
