    Direct flights

    Despite being the world's most populous continent, there are surprisingly few destinations in Asia which have regular direct flight links with the UK. The popularity of flights to India has mushroomed in recent years, thanks to the booming Indian economy and the relaxation of regulations governing flights between the UK and India. Meanwhile, whilst links between China and the rest of Asia continue to leap forwards, Beijing and Shanghai remain as the only two mainland Chinese cities, with regular scheduled flights from the UK.

    Regional flights and connections

    Both Birmingham and Manchester offer a small number of direct links to Asian countries - with both airports offering a good range of flights to Pakistan. Birmingham is still the only UK regional airport outside London to offer direct flights to India, whereas Manchester offers useful onward connections through Singapore.

    Whilst many regional airports offer connecting flights to Asia through London or other European mainland hubs, more and more passengers are taking advantage of Emirates' regional links to Dubai. In addition to the airline's well establish flights to Dubai from London, Birmingham and Manchester, Emirates will also be starting new flights from Newcastle to Dubai in September 2007. Additionally, a wide range of onward connections is available from Manchester through either Abu Dhabi (Etihad) or Doha (Qatar Airways).

    Charter flights

    Asia is not really a major charter flight destination, although this is starting to change as the leisure airlines respond to intense competition from no-frills carriers on short-haul European routes. Flights to Goa will almost always be operated by charter airlines, whereas, tour operators tend to use a mix of scheduled and charter airlines when offering packages to destinations such as Sri Lanka, southern India and Thailand. 2007 sees MyTravel Airways launch the first ever charter flights to China from the UK.
