Mini Guide to Abuja
Some debate still rages over just how safe Nigeria is for tourists - and for Western travellers in particular - but its capital and centre of administration Abuja’s tireless efforts to win over foreign visitors has earned it the nickname of “Second London”. (We concede that there are certain shady areas of London one wouldn’t want to venture into after dark, either.) Abuja has an established tourist industry, but much of the city remains under construction, with a nascent IT industry set to bring in considerable revenue in the years to come.
As a result, it very much remains to be seen which direction Abuja will take in the future. For the time being, certain attractions continue to catch travellers’ eyes, like mystical Zuma Rock, the locals’ version of Uluru. Monsoon season starts in April and generally goes on through to October; most holidaymakers tend to plump for the months of July and August, when the weather breaks and conditions are best for exploring this most youthful and uncharted of destinations.
