Flights to Nigeria – January 2009 update

Flights to Nigeria are notoriously hard to come by if you are just searching on consolidator websites like Expedia and Ebookers. In fact, we couldn't find any availability on Nigeria flights with any of the main consolidator websites, including Expedia, Ebookers and Lastminute.com. This leaves Opodo as the only major consolidator offering Nigeria flights from the UK. You will therefore probably find it much more convenient to book your Nigeria flights direct with the airlines. Unfortunately the difficulty in finding reasonably priced flights to Nigeria has been compounded by the recent suspension of Virgin Nigeria's long-haul flights, although parent company Virgin Atlantic does still operate regular flights to Lagos from London Heathrow.

Direct flights to Nigeria from Europe can be summarised as follows:

Arik Air -- London Heathrow to Lagos.
Air France -- Paris to Lagos and Port Harcourt. Feeder connections to Paris are available from throughout the UK.
Bellview Airlines – London Heathrow to Lagos
British Airways -- London Heathrow to Abuja and Lagos. Feeder connections to Heathrow are available from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and also Belfast and Dublin (BMI/Aer Lingus).
Iberia -- Madrid to Lagos. Feeder connections are only available from London.
KLM -- Amsterdam to Abuja, Lagos and Kano (via Abuja); Feeder connections to Amsterdam are available from throughout the UK.
Virgin Atlantic -- London Heathrow to Lagos. Feeder connections are available with codeshare partner BMI from Aberdeen, Belfast International, Dublin, Durham Tees Valley, Edinburgh, Glasgow International, Leeds Bradford and Manchester.

    Domestic flight connections

Even Opodo does not sell domestic flight connections within Nigeria, so you will have to book these direct with the airline concerned. Nigeria doesn’t currently have a national airline, so competition on domestic flights is fierce. Everyone wants a piece of the pie, but no single airline has really emerged from the pack yet -- for example, there are up to ten airlines listed offering flights between Lagos an Abuja at any one time. What is the best way of taking a pick, and which airlines are worth trusting? We would tend to advise that those airlines which stretch their tentacles outside Nigeria are generally more trustworthy than those which don't. Virgin Nigeria have suspended their London to Lagos flights in order to concentrate on their short-haul services, whilst relative newcomer Arik Air, who offer flights from Heathrow to Lagos, have rapidly become a major player on the Nigerian domestic scene.

Note that most domestic flights from Lagos Murtala Muhammed (LOS) international airport (LOS) operate from the brand new domestic terminal, also known as "MMA II". This is just over half a mile from the international terminal. However, Arik Air operate from the general aviation terminal.

    Surface transport

Driving in Nigeria is not for the faint-hearted. Snarling traffic, regular police blocks, giant pot holes, poor lighting and the absence of traffic lights means getting anywhere fast is nigh on impossible. On Flightmapping’s last visit to Lagos it took over four and a half hours to drive the three miles from our hotel to the airport. This, we were reliably informed, is not uncommon! In December 2008, British Airways announced they were re-scheduling their Lagos flights to arrive by 6pm, specifically because of concerns over traffic congestion and armed robberies on the roads connecting the airport with Lagos Island and Victoria Island.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (http://www.nrc-ng.org/) cheekily use what looks like a French TGV on their logo, but grand vitesse is certainly not a term which could be used to describe their services. For example, the weekly train from Lagos to Kano takes just over 36 hours to cover the 530 mile journey.
Travel by train in Nigeria is certainly something for rail buffs, rather than an efficient means of getting between A and B. For that, we would have to recommend domestic flights, or for journeys where flights are not available, going by coach. ABC transport (http://www.abctransport.com/) operate long-distance coaches throughout Nigeria, with a variety of different services, including sleeper coaches and limited stop executive services.
