Although France has a stronger colonial connections with Morocco, Tangier’s geographical proximity to Spain makes Malaga a much more attractive transfer option, especially considering its huge range of flights from just about every UK airport.Alternatively, domestic flights to Tangier are available from Casablanca. Some independent travellers also choose to reach Tangier by sea, with frequent sailings available from Algeciras, near Gibraltar. Day trip tours to Tangier are also on offer from many of the resorts near Malaga.

Only problem seems to be that flights to Tangier are considerably more expensive than flights back from Gibraltar. Is there a reason for this?

Your problem is that you are looking at direct flights to Tangier with Royal Air Maroc, who are a full service airline, and you are paying Heathrow prices too - same if you went via Casablanca. I've actually done this trip myself, but I started in Marrakech, which has lots of cheap flights from budget airlines, as well as network carriers too. The best way of travelling around Morocco is by train - even a first class ticket from Marrakech to Casablanca and onwards to Tangier is going to cost you about the same as a return trip on the Heathrow Express.
It is a great trip, and Morocco is a fascinating country. For out and out splendour, I think a visit to the Grand Mosque in Casablanca is a must - just because Tangier is the seaport for Europe doesn't make it the best place to start such a trip.
