Demand for flights to Morocco has dampened slightly since then-Chancellor Gordon Brown doubled air passenger duty in 2007. Despite Morocco’s location within sight of southern Spain, it is considered to be a long-haul destination in the eyes of the exchequer. Flights to Morocco are therefore subject to a whopping £40 air passenger duty charge per person on the outbound leg.
Despite this, the availability of cheap flights to Morocco has expanded significantly since the country signed an open skies treaty with the EU in 2006. Morocco is the first country in Africa to enter into an arrangement which creates a completely liberalised airspace, opening up its airports to unrestricted competition. This has enabled Morocco flights to be offered by both Ryanair and Easyjet from the UK, and Aer Lingus from Dublin, with Thomson Airways also operating some holiday flights to Morocco. British Airways franchise partner GB Airways has now been swallowed up into the Easyjet behemoth, so British Airways no longer offer flights to Morocco, although home grown flights are available from both Royal Air Maroc (Heathrow to Casablanca) and their low-cost subsidiary Atlas Blue (Gatwick to Marrakech).
Despite this liberalisation, most Morocco flights still depart from London, although Ryanair do also offer cheap flights to Marrakech from Bristol.
Connecting flights
Although the choice of direct flights to Morocco from London should make it unnecessary to take connecting flights, you're much less likely to find a direct link from other UK airports.
Beyond major airports such as Marrakech and Agadir, you're most likely to find connecting flights through Royal Air Maroc's main hub in Casablanca.
Naturally, the widest range of flights to Morocco is available from France, which has strong colonial ties with Morocco. There are also plenty of flights to Morocco from Spain, Morocco's closest European neighbour. Unfortunately, neither of these options are ideal for making flight connections from the UK - many flights from Paris to Morocco depart from Orly airport, instead of Charles de Gaulle, which has the widest choice feeder flights from British regional airports. Meanwhile, it is no longer possible to arrange through bookings from airports like Manchester or Birmingham via Madrid or Barcelona, as British Airways have withdrawn from these routes.
If an obvious direct route is not available, we would certainly suggest shopping around the different online travel agents (Ebookers, Expedia etc). Alternatively, you might want to consider travelling between different cities in Morocco by train or coach. Compared to many other countries in Africa, the trains in Morocco are of a good standard, using old rolling stock from the French railways.
Flights to Morocco via Gibraltar and southern Spain.
If you can't find a convenient direct route, another alternative which might be worth exploring is to look for flights to Gibraltar or southern Spain instead, and to continue to Morocco by ferry. This is also an excellent way to avoid paying Gordon Brown’s grossly unfair £40 air passenger duty. You can also make the journey all the way to Morocco by train and ferry, either via Paris and Madrid, or perhaps courtesy of a ferry from the French port of Marseille.
