Alexandria Any in a nutshell: Established by Alexander the Great (hence the name) and later known as “the Pearl of the Mediterranean”, Alexandria forms, after Cairo, the second largest city in Egypt.
In the summer months, this busy seaport takes on the appearance of a buzzing holiday resort, with visitors and locals alike enjoying long, sandy stretches of shore and a consistently warm climate. Travellers tend to be drawn here for its history, though - with the exception of the prominent Pompey’s Pillar, the 99ft-high remnant of a temple, positioned high on the steepest of inclines - you’ll have to look hard these days to find traces of Alexandria as it once was. Excavations continue, with many of the treasures being stored away in the 1800-item strong Alexandria National Museum; otherwise, try venturing underground, to the Kom el Shoqafa, or ancient catacombs, a subterranean maze of burial chambers that requires an early start to beat the crowds.
Should you run out of holiday reading, a stop at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a must: this eleven-storey archive contains no fewer than eight million books.
