Further details about finding flights to Africa :
Africa is often divided into two very broad political and geographical zones - North Africa, which includes many resort destinations on the Mediterranean coast, and Sub Saharan Africa, which makes up the rest of this vast continent. In terms of finding flights to Africa, the same geographical boundaries exist, although it is often considerably easier to find flights to South Africa, than it is to many other Sub Saharan African countries.
Scheduled flights
Regular travellers to Africa will often complain about the lack of competition on flights between Europe and the destination they are trying to get to. This is perhaps most prominent in Nigeria, where the availability of direct flights to and from London falls massively short of demand (see our Nigeria flights pages for further details). Demand for flights to South Africa is also very strong, especially over the British winter period, when South Africa's climate is particularly favourable, but there is at least a little bit more competition on these routes.
Regional flights & Connections
Africa is not exactly awash with major Intercontinental hub airports, so you're more likely to find flight connections through other European airports, like Amsterdam Schiphol, Frankfurt International or Paris Charles de Gaulle. Many flight routes to Africa still operate on old colonial lines, so you might also end up taking a connection through Brussels, Milan or Lisbon.
The range of direct scheduled flights to Africa from UK regional airports remains poor - apart perhaps from Flyglobespan's new flights to South Africa from Manchester. However, there are plenty of leisure airlines offering flights to Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and The Gambia from various major UK regional airports. Outside London, the best choice of leisure flights to Africa is available from Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands and Bristol.
There are very few options for taking connecting flights through other African hubs, because none of these airports have feeder flights from anywhere in the UK outside London. Occasionally, you might find a routing via Dubai or another Middle Eastern hub - considering the challenges of finding flights to South Africa over the winter period, this can be quite useful option!
Charter flights
Popular holiday destinations in North Africa include Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. There are also some charter flights available to Kenya and Gambia.
No-frills flights
Since Morocco joined the European Open Skies Zone, budget airlines like Easyjet, Thomsonfly and Ryanair have opened up cheap flights to Morocco from London and Manchester.
